100 Greatest Books (and more): A 28 Year Project

Six years ago, I combined several 100 Greatest Books lists and began reading my way through some of the greatest literature available.

Read about the journey so far here.

It’s been a truly rewarding experience, especially as I begin reading through the older Pulitzer Prize winners. Andersonville, by MacKinley Kantor (1958), for example, took me a month to get through, but the characters have continued to live on very vividly in my imagination. The Way West, by A.B. Guthrie (1950), too was a refreshing migration-westward novel.

Others were a bit forgettable or, rather, it was interesting to ponder why they’ve become so iconic (ahem, The Old Man and the Sea).

As you can see, there are over 300 books on the list now. In November of 2012, I’d gotten through 43 (14%). By December 2013, I’d read 65 (22%). At this point, October 2014, I’ve read 82 (27%). I love thinking about this as a 28 year project, with 22 more years to go at this pace!

It’s been especially fun to visit used bookstores with my lists, which I have printed and marked up on paper. Green Mountain Books in Lyndonville, VT was my best road trip yet. I think I found three hard-to-find books among their dusty piles.

Next, I’d like to reorganize my list, better identifying the year of publication, author and title, possibly so others can download it for their own use.

Until then, here’s my cobbled together list of the Greatest Books. The ones I’ve read are in bold.

Curious as to how I built the list? To be honest, I forgot which sources I used for the original list. However, in a previous post, I linked to 7 sources from which anyone could draw. Check out the other 100 Greatest Books lists.

[UPDATE: I’ve organized the Greatest Books list much better recently, updated it and made it available for download here.]
