Print is alive and well. Direct mail fundraising can still be the best way for nonprofits to acquire, retain, and excite donors. Alumni publications can be the strongest foundation stone for university engagement and alumni giving.
Alumni Publications
I have served as a Managing Editor, and on the Editorial Board, of several alumni publications. The PDFs below are examples of my work. Please keep in mind these publications are a team effort and I can not take credit for all the writing, photography, nor design.
I am able to assist clients in:
- creating an annual editorial calendar so quarterly publication deadlines don’t sneak up on us
- interviewing subjects and writing stories
- supervising or collaborating with colleagues, writers, photographers, graphic designers, and print shops to bring a publication to life
- integrating the publication with social media campaigns, interactive landing pages, YouTube assets, and development materials.
As a writer, editor, or project manager, I can highlight the amazing work of your students, faculty, and alumni, as well as create inspiring narrative arcs that (re)connect alumni with their alma mater.
Print Publications
Print publications exist amongst a variety of channels and challenges, although they are often the unsung pièce de résistance that closes the deal for donors, subscribers, prospective students, or event attendees. As a former Director of Marketing, I have been responsible for more than my fair share of paper publications – recycled, of course! You can see samples of my work below.
What is hardest to describe is how I worked through challenges or served the best interests of my employer or client with print publications. For example:
- Designing a holiday card for Advancement that captured a bi-coastal campus.
- Creating hard copy materials for other departments, and working with them from the conceptual stage all the way through printing and distribution.
- Designing Admissions and Alumni Relations materials that accurately represented the organic, group-oriented nature of the college.
- Ensuring our materials represent an accurate picture of diversity in our programs, as well as making sure anyone would feel welcome based on the language and imagery.
- Discovering storerooms full of older alumni publications, posters, and folders and finding creative ways to incorporate them into Admissions packets, enlist student and staff help in distributing them nationally, and ensuring the archives had copies.
- Deploying a “Hometown Hero” strategy which included newspaper, radio, and bus ads, as well as local and print media relations.
- Overseeing a rebrand that entailed overhauling every print publication on campus. This also meant identifying some weak processes around campus signage and things like letterhead and business cards, which our department ultimately took on in order to ensure the high quality of our new brand materials.
While I consider myself a digital marketer, I’m also “channel agnostic,” meaning I am not attached to the channel or media that helps you achieve your goal. And in many cases, print publications do the trick.
Additional Projects to Consider
Print publications can complement and supplement social media, digital advertising, and they are a powerful part of integrated, multichannel marketing. If you would like to learn more about any of those projects, click the links above or contact me.
Next Steps
I would love to speak with you about print publications and/or alumni magazines for your college, university or nonprofit! Please fill out this Contact Form.
I’ll respond as soon as possible, and we’ll arrange a meeting over Zoom. This 30-60 minute discovery call is entirely free, and the purpose is twofold: to articulate what the project is and determine whether we would like to work together. After the call, and if we would like to proceed, I’ll develop a proposal / scope of work, which outlines the project, budget, and timeline. If we’re on the same page then, I’ll send a contract.
Let’s start with just a little more info first. Complete the contact form here, and I look forward to hearing from you!
