“I worked closely with Michelle while she was a contractor at Palo Alto University, where she played a central role as part of our External Affairs team.

“Michelle immersed herself in PAU’s culture and community and became a trusted partner in shaping our brand voice and public presence. She managed our social media channels and external-facing newsletter, developed and led our editorial calendar, facilitated large-scale content meetings with stakeholders across the university, and led strategic advertising campaigns. Her work strengthened brand consistency, increased brand awareness, and improved how we showed up across channels.

“Michelle has a unique ability to combine strong storytelling with a strategic understanding of how messaging, audience, and platforms work together. She immersed herself in the content she created and knew how to meaningfully engage our audiences, even when working with complex or sensitive stories. She is also highly knowledgeable about current social media platforms, trends, and best practices, and she uses performance data to inform decisions and refine strategy.

“The content meetings Michelle led were large and cross-functional, with stakeholders from across the university. She kept these meetings focused, productive, and on track. Michelle also played a key role in funneling content from across departments into a clear messaging framework that increased external engagement and visibility. She is highly collaborative, deeply knowledgeable, and a pleasure to work with.

“I truly miss working with Michelle and would highly recommend her to any organization seeking a strategic, brand-minded, and data-savvy communications professional.”

“I have been working with Michelle for over 5 years, and she still, consistently unearths new ways for Green America to increase ROI, find new donors, streamline processes, and more authentically share our story.

“Michelle is an expert in Google Ad Grants, paid Google Ads, Microsoft Ads for Social Impact, Meta Ads, search engine optimization, social media creative and management, and A/B website testing.

“I am profoundly grateful that I can go to Michelle with big strategic challenges. Michelle is a ‘C-level’ thinker. Her decades of non-profit leadership make her the perfect thought-partner for how I can inspire change in our organization. I am thankful for her mentorship and can honestly say a talk with Michelle makes me feel more energized and confident as a leader.

“What I love most about working with Michelle is that she’s not just going to recite industry-best practices, advise me on a strategy, and walk away. She knows what works, AND she will roll up her sleeves and implement. Michelle is a “doer,” expert project manager, problem solver, presenter, and analyst.

“Green America has benefited tremendously from Michelle’s expertise, ambition, and dedication. Personally, it is a joy to work with Michelle!”

“For several years, Michelle has served as a trusted digital advertising consultant for Reading Partners, a nonprofit literacy organization that supports striving young readers across the country. Michelle has supported our work on an ongoing basis and she has also stepped in more extensively on two occasions when a team leader was out on family leave.

“Michelle is very easy to work with and solution oriented. She listens carefully and asks insightful, clarifying questions when we brief her about specific projects and she provides sound, comprehensive advice that very much factors in our budget realities.

“Additionally, Michelle has invested the time in getting to know our organization, our regions, and a number of team members across the country. Michelle is truly an integral extension of our core team. On a recent campaign, Michelle provided key recommendations that led to a tripling of our conversion rates. To anyone considering working with a digital marketing consultant, I would enthusiastically recommend Michelle!”

What is a sitemap worth? Could 15 minutes earn $80,000?

What is a sitemap worth? Could 15 minutes earn $80,000?

I don’t hear many nonprofit marketing staff talk about their sitemaps. Maybe their webmasters, or the firms redesigning their websites, will encourage them to install a sitemap, but the internal marketing staff seem to consider it a technical project, and not too vital to their outreach or fundraising work.

But what if I told you fifteen minutes of work could get you more than 200,000 new visitors to your website each year, and 9,000,000 new impressions on search engines?

Because a sitemap can do that!

I have helped clients install XML sitemaps, the preferred technology of search engines, and one of the larger nonprofits I work with saw the numbers above roll in over the next year.

If it helps, I’ll put it into context:

200,000 new visitors were an approximate 20% increase in website traffic.

What would that mean for your website?

The nonprofit with 200,000 new visitors has an approximate 10% conversion rate on their website.

What would 20,000 new emails and donations mean to your organization?

Next Steps

My preferred website platform is WordPress, and Yoast is an invaluable SEO plugin. If you install Yoast SEO on WordPress, go to your Dashboard > Yoast SEO > Settings > General > Site Features > and scroll down to XML sitemaps. Toggle the feature on and click the option to view your sitemap once it’s ready.

You can take the slow road and let the likes of Google and Bing crawl your site in their own sweet time. Or you can submit your sitemap through your own Google Search Console. Don’t have one of those? I would be happy to help you set one up. You can also follow the instructions here. I especially appreciate that Google has broken down the instructions by level of time and interest in learning!

For some nonprofit staff, with too much to do and too few hours in the day, this may have already been TMI. I understand. So, let’s focus on the most important steps:

Install an XML sitemap by:

We work so hard to make the world a better place. Let’s make sure our website fundamentals are in place to give our work the best chance at success!
